Gerry Turano - Shadow Pillars

Jointly with the Fifth InternationalWorkshop on "Semantic Web Applications and Perspectives", the Sicilian artist Gerry Turano presents an individual art exhibition collecting part of his major recentwork, including twelve drawings, reliefs, and sculptures that are metaphorically associated with the themes of the workshop.

A core subject of Gerry's work is "Architectures", considered as cognitive schemata (Michel Foucault might have called them "creative épistém ès") that are composed in order to explore and control the space, as much as semantic models allow the access and manipulation of the knowledge implicitly encoded in the Web of Data.

The art works show different aggregations of signs and shapes that are sometimes inextricably entangled, but still suggest synergies that are functional to Research.

A new type of art works, presented in this context, includes "Solid Shadows", clay sculptures where the artist offers an alternative reading of everyday reality: shadows become tridimensional supports (Shadow Pillars) for small, decaying architectures. Gerry Turano's works suggest a tension towards a deeper and more sophisticated Knowledge, something in need of a complex trajectory in order to reach simple truths; such a tension is perfectly representative of the workshop themes, since the implicit knowledge in theWeb of Data needs to be modeled sideways for the Semantic Web to become a reality. Gerry Turano is an artist, illustrator, and designer who lives and works in Rome.

His artistic overture goes back to 1984 with an exhibition at the Internationale Burckhardt Akademie, which he eventually became a member of. During the next years, he has been exhibiting in art galleries and museums, including the Villa Torlonia Museum at Casina delle Civette, the Vigna di Valle Musam, and the G.Caproni Museum in Trento. Currently, his works are part of notable private collections and permanent exhibitions.
